3 out of 5 stars Great toy, with caveats   June 11, 2010

Overall, this is a fun toy.

Software frequently crashes on Vista, but otherwise is really easy to use with some cool tools!
Focusing is a pain because--remember, this is a toy--cheap plastic knob doesn't function smoothly.

We've had zero luck using 200x in combination with the stage and illumination. I just don't think there's enough light. In hand-held mode, with auxiliary light sources, it's okay.

Optics, in combination with focusing issues, won't make this a great tool for plant cells and such, but we've found some pretty cool bugs that we wouldn't have seen with the naked eye. (Diagnosing mites in mason bee cocoons, etc.) I was hoping to use this to do some basic parasite tests (fecal floats) for my animals. Hold out for a traditional student 'scope, at the least, for anything like this.

We're keeping it since for the price, it's a fun toy even if we only really use it at 10x and 60x. If I'd bought it locally, though, I might be more predisposed to returning it and saving up for a better 'scope (even sans camera)...but it all depends upon what qualities you most need.

You'll need to pick up your own glass slides and cover slips elsewhere--dealers found on Amazon have been good to us!

4 out of 5 stars Good price, good value, good product   April 24, 2010

I have had this digital microscope for about two years and it's been great. 200x power, never broke and takes good photos. We use this microscope for marine engineering when parts fail we can take close up photos of the broken bits to try and decide what caused the failure. If mine broke I would buy another of the same.

The only negative is the software, maybe fixed by now that does not allow me to control the microscope directly. Also the software puts the photos in some hidden file inside the program and does not let me save direct to files. I would guess this has been fixed by now since mine is two years old, but i should mention it as it's a bit of a hassle and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

All in all an excellent product.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Water Quality Youth Programs   April 1, 2010

I like this microscope and had access to one before at my previous job. I immediately got a new one when I changed employers so I could keep using it. The resolution is not super-perfect, especially for true microscopic items. I really recommend it as more of a dissecting microscope than as a compound scope. We take it out to environmental events and youth programs, along with a laptop and small photo printer. We do stream studies collecting aquatic insects with youth, have them work to identify them and then take a picture with the scope for them to take home as a souvenir. The kids love it!

4 out of 5 stars For this price, it's a really good microscope   February 21, 2010

For this price, it's a really good USB microscope, I'm just missing an active scale in the software.
There is a fix ruler, so that will do for now...
It would be great if the software would be there for Apple OS X as well.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Educational Tool   February 5, 2010

I learned of this digital microscope in the Master Gardener program in Marin County, CA and I must say it is a very exciting addition to my home educational library. The QX5 is very easy to setup and get running. It offers flexibility in viewing material on the existing stand or in a hand-held mode. The fine focus is slightly difficult to obtain but the overall performance is outstanding for the price. It is 10x, 60x, and 200x in power and so can be used for many slides. My main use is with plant tissue, insects, and inspection of diseased plants. It meets all expectations and is highly versatile for visual inspection of minute objects not visible to the naked eye.
As an educational object for children, I find it very helpful for adults and of value in exploring the world in a different way. It is amazing to find a microscope that works so well with a PC to not only provide great magnification but also has the capacity of taking still photos and videos! I just made a presentation using both still and video modes for plant insect specimens. Try this unit out and you will be surprised at the quality of the image. The LED light source is adequate for most observations. I do use an additional LED flashlight to add more light to the subject. You do have upper and lower light sources in this unit.

Frank thinks you will enjoy this microscope.
Highly recommended.
