| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Compact, lightweight and a wide magnification range - this standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format. It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon's optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. And the circular aperture can give beautiful background blur effects. This new wide zoom ratio EF-S lens delivers excellent high-speed performance at an affordable price.

Would not buy again July 22, 2010 Tom 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this lens with a 50d about a yeas ago. And have been dissapointed ever since. When I received the lens the picture quality was lower than my G7 point and shoot. The photos were ok but not what I expect and at this point did not know if it was the camera or the lens. It seemed that I could tweak the quality by shooting at about 80mm at f10. Even at those settings I ran into problems with focus when overhead panning. It appears that when the lens is tilted up (or down) the lens zoom will creep changing the setting. So now I had to tape the zoom ring when panning. At this point I decided to rent the same lens and an additional "L" series lens. The "L" lens operated flawlessly and the picture quality fabulous. The 18-200mm standard zoom rental had the same issues as mine, proving my camera was ok. Whenever I contacted Canon it was the same story, they knew about the lens creep and described the focus mechanism as their older motorized technology. If your making a decision on a lens purchase I suggest you rent it first.
For me it will be the canon "L" series lenses for now on.

Grsat Lens, particularly for outdoor trips. Lens stabilizer system works well. Lens rotates smoothly. Sharp details, even at the corners.
great lense April 29, 2010 Kathy Dowden (anacoco, LA, US) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is a great lense.I was undecided as to what lense i would buy; a sigma or tameron or canon) my photography instructor advise me to go with a canon lense since i had a canon camera. it's been great! i am completely happy with my choice.
A great "all purpose" lens. April 24, 2010 PhotoDS (Boston, MA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I recently got this lens, and after putting it through its paces on a family vacation to Florida, I couldn't be happier. As a parent of young children, I never know what I'm going to be shooting next. One second the kids will be right in front of me, the next they're on the other side of the playground, if I had to switch lenses every time that happened I'd miss too many shots. This is a great one lens solution, the pictures that I'm getting are sharp and bright. I highly recommend it if you need one "do-it-all" lens.
I bought this lens to replace a Sigma 18-200 (the older, non-OS version), which I was never very happy with.
Warning! Do not buy this lens. April 23, 2010 Laxman (CT USA) 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
Warning! Do not buy this lens! There is a design flaw with the lock and the lens is not durable.
I recently purchased this lens for an upcoming trip.
It was used with a 40D delivering semi-sharp images.
Three days into the trip the lens lock jammed.
The lens no longer worked in either the automatic or manual focus setting.
This lens is an expensive purchase and the design/quality/durability is lacking.
I had to buy another lens while on the trip, a 55-250mm f4.
FYI: I also have a 1D and an EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS lens.
