Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A thoroughly modern design that's optimized for select Canon EOS digital SLRs. Its angle of view is equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, with a floating optical system that can focus down to full life-size (1:1) magnification. Inner focusing, driven by a silent and powerful ring-type USM, means the lens' overall length never changes during focus. This lens is a wonderful multi-purpose lens that's equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits or available-light photos. Like all Canon EF-S Lenses, its use is restricted to the EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel and EOS Digital Rebel XT cameras
(as of February 2005).

Amazon.com Product Description
Bring small things into full-sized view with the Canon EF 60mm macro USM lens. Macro lenses can uncover detail that would be impossible to detect by the eye and give new perspective to extremely minute subjects such as insects or the petals of a small flower, and this lens is no exception. The 60mm lens offers an angle of view that's equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, along with a floating optical system that can focus down to life-size 1:1 magnification. The inner focusing system, meanwhile, is driven by a silent and powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM), meaning the lens's overall length never changes during focus. Ultimately, the multi-purpose lens is equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits, or available-light photos. Like all Canon EF-S lenses, this lens is restricted to the EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel, and EOS Digital Rebel XT cameras.

  • Focal length: 60mm
  • Maximum aperture: 1:2.8

  • Closest focusing distance: 0.65 feet
  • Filter size: 52mm

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Macro!   July 12, 2010
G. Stojanowski (Sierra Vista, AZ)
This EF-S lens is an outstanding addtion to any user of Canon's "small sensor" cameras, from Rebel to 7D! Its focal length of 60mm is not only a terrific Macro lens for all but the most "jittery" subjects such as small insects, its 35mm camera equivalent of 96mm makes it an ideal, relatively fast portrait lens too! A true "two-fer" at a very reasonable price. Optically, it offers superior performance in both macro and prime lens mode. After using it for a couple of months, I am continually impressed with the versatility and fine image quality of this lens. I heartily recommend it without reservation!

5 out of 5 stars Money well spent...   July 1, 2010

I build a lot of scale models and needed a lens of this type to get in nice and tight and show off a lot of detail. I don't have a lot of time to be a professional shutterbug---all I want to do is take great pics of my work without attaining a Bachelor's degree. This lens really gets it done. Beautiful, detailed shots that are crystal clear. I had a hard time coming to terms with paying almost as much money for the lens as we did the camera, but it's worth every penny and more. I have the standard 18---55mm, and 75---300mm lens that came with the camera and they're "ok", but there's a reason those lens were packaged with my camera for $679...you get what you pay for!

Buy a better lens that suits your needs and don't look back!

5 out of 5 stars My most prized lens   June 16, 2010

I originally purchased this lens for portraiture, specifically newborns. I was also looking for a macro lens, and a bit frustrated with some of the limitations from my 50mm.

This lens, in my opinion, is underpriced for the quality of images. Amazing DOF, soft bokeh, incredibly sharp focus. Highly recommended. This should be a staple in every photographer's camera bag.

4 out of 5 stars Canon 60mm f2.8 review   May 26, 2010

Used now 0ne month. Fast on focus, reliable. On Rebel Xsi, gives 35 mm equiv.96 mm--mild telephoto. OK for some landscape photography: mountain from 10 miles, barn in field at more than 100 yds/m, flowering plant at 10 paces. Landscape photo near Cannonville Utah, using tripod and 2-sec delayed release, was pin-sharp corner-to-corner, near-to-far, on 13" by 19" print. Could identify flag on butte-top, about 4 mi distance.

Have tried macro mode. Copying 8.5by11" documents at 5 ft--good results. Tried on 1" flowers at about 1 ft--too close, unsharp (my Canon 18-55mm can handle that).

Have done merged panoramas with excellent results: tripod, 2 sec.release delay, manual exposure on same setting, of Lower Calf Creek Falls, Escalante Utah; height of falls and pool 150 ft, from about 150 ft. Combined a number of photos to get composite on Photoshop Elements 4.0, seamlessly for a great photo!

Still learning!

4 out of 5 stars Great lens but broke after 5 months   April 27, 2010

This is a great lens which produces sharp and colorful images,
although it broke after 5 months (~6000 pics) after I shot at f/32.
It gives the Err 01 (communication between camera and lens is faulty),
which is caused by the aperture malfunction.
The lens is still on warranty but not international,
which forces me to pay 1/2 of its price for reparation.
If I would have to buy another lens I'll choose the same one.
