Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon's second-generation vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a conventional lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) ensure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

3 out of 5 stars Nice lens but dusty -- QC issue   March 4, 2010
G. Xu (Denver, CO)
Very useful lens with good price. However, my copy has MANY dust specks inside the front and back of lens elements. It is not the brand new NIKON lens should be. The dusts probably won't effect image quality, but it definitely would reduce the re-sell value of the lens. Nikon really needs to improve its quality control on this lens' production.

5 out of 5 stars Professional quality at a pro-sumer price   February 27, 2010

This is an outstanding lens and I just love it. Let me state right off the bat that I am a pixel-peeper. I sell stock photos commercially, however, so I am a pixel-peeper by necessity--not just because I am obsessive-compulsive. If you are a pixel-peeper like me, this lens will not disappoint you. I have used a wide variety of consumer, pro-sumer, and professional offerings from both Canon and Nikon so I know the difference between professional and non-professional quality.

*This lens is tack-sharp and resolves detail just as well as any pro lens I have used
*This lens has a minimal/negligible amount of distortion
*This lens has a minimal/negligible amount of vignetting
*This lens has a minimal/negligible amount of chromatic aberration
*This lens feels very solid and well constructed
*This lens is priced very reasonably considering the performance

Now, I have not used this lens in low-light conditions because it is not a low-light lens, so I can not comment on that. This is not a professional wedding photographer's lens; the 70-200mm f/2.8 or 80-200mm f/2.8 would be the lenses of choice in that situation. I have, however, used it for outdoor nature photography, portraits, architecture, etc. and no one can tell me it isn't as sharp as the aforementioned f/2.8 lenses in those conditions. This is the (underline "the") travel lens to have; there is no reason to bring any other telephoto lens. Just this lens and a wide angle lens (such as the 20-35mm which I use) is all I need for any trip. I could go on but I won't; I think you get the idea. This is an outstanding lens at a great price. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good - like I expected.   February 6, 2010

I haven't used the lens much due to cold weather, but my first impressions are very good. I bought this to get more reach than my 55-200VR. I am ready to go get the great results so many others have gotten.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor   January 30, 2010

Excellent lense for almost every shot. You may look for a more aperture f/2.8 when shooting at low light.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon's best & affordable telezoom lens...   January 15, 2010
C. OGURTANI (Istanbul)
Best, best, best... Don't think a minute to buy this lens; only run for purchasing that... This tack-sharp VRII lens is a real bargain...
